Column mounted shifters for manual transmission vehicles were very common from the late 1930's to late 1950's. They were also referred to as "Three on the Tree" transmissions. The shift pattern was selected by engaging the clutch floor pedal and selecting the desired gear with the gear select on the right side of the steering column.
